Getting justice for domestic workers

from Good Morning Cape Town with Lester Kiewit · host CapeTalk

Did you know that if you employ a domestic worker who works for you for more than 24 hours per month, then that domestic worker must be registered for the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) once that threshold has passed? This applies to staff including gardeners, nannies, and caregivers. This is but one aspect that is being championed by Michael Helu, a Cape Town-based labour rights advocate and organiser with the South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union (SADSAWU). Helu actively campaigns for the rights, fair wages, and legal protection of domestic workers, highlighting the challenges they face in private spaces and the need for compliance with employment laws. Lester Kiewit spoke to him about some of the more common issues that he finds himself dealing with on behalf of domestic workers.   Good Morning Cape Town with Lester Kiewit is a podcast of the CapeTalk breakfast show.  This programme is your authentic Cape Town wake-up call.
