Ghaznavid Empire

In this episode, we focus on the Ghaznavid Empire, a Sunni Muslim dynasty of Turkic slave-soldier origin that rose to power under Sabuktigin and reached its height under Mahmud of Ghazni, becoming a formidable military and cultural force across Central Asia, Iran, and the Indian subcontinent. We explore how the empire combined aggressive expansion, especially into northern India, with a deeply Persianate system of administration that turned Ghazni into a celebrated center of literature, scholarship, and courtly culture. The episode also traces the Ghaznavids’ gradual decline after key defeats by the Seljuks, the shift of political power to Lahore, and the dynasty’s final collapse at the hands of the Ghurids in the late twelfth century.
