Ghost Stories

from Strange Things with Chris James · host Chris James

Back in the 40s, people living in San Ygnacio didn’t have plumbing. If you needed the facilities you had to walk out the back door and use the little building in the far corner of the yard. You put the outhouse as far away from the main house as you could because in the summer time, you didn’t want that smell invading your living space. At night it was necessary to use a kerosene lantern to light the way. The outhouse was out by the back of the yard past the corrals and pigeon coup. He would tell the family there was a headless ghost that would follow him as he went to the outhouse or returned. The ghost would come from the corrals. He was not so much scared as tired of seeing this specter. The family figured the old guy was just imagining things. It was dark and using a lantern outside could create some scary shadows. Maybe he was just imagining things. After years of hearing about the headless ghost the family mostly ignored it. The grand-father died in 1959. In 1997 or 99 a fence was being built along the area where the corrals and pigeon coup used to sit. The workers were digging fence posts when they found bones buried in the yard, human bones. The crew unearthed an old yellowed skeleton. It was missing the head.
