Today’s episode was recorded live from Europa Pool for the latest instalment of ‘Gibraltar Today: At the Beach’. Tito Vallejo was a former pool manager at Europa Pool, and shared some memories of what was then known as Nuffield Pool. As Tito is also a historian, he also he gave us a brief history of the area and how it was once used as barracks.As part of this summer series, we've spoken to lifeguards at some of the locations that we’ve visited. This time we spoke to Ethan Licudi about the specific challenges of lifeguarding the pool.The RAF air cadets use Europa Pool for the swimming proficiency every year. Tony Macedo from the No 2 Squadron told us why the air cadets need to swim as well as the many other events they do, such as the Special Olympics, Rugby 7s, and Torque the Rock.We also had the chance to speak to some of the pool regulars: Rose Graham praised the accessibility of the pool compared to our local beaches; Barbara Jurado described how the toilets at the pool are in need of refurbishment; and Alex Martinez gave us her perspective as a parent at how practical the pool is for her family.
