Welcome to Gloucester, MA, "The Place to Be in the Summer."  Originally founded in 1623, the settlement was abandoned in 1626 when the inhabitants moved to Salem where more fertile soil was found.  The area was slowly resettled and was formally incorporated in 1642.  The town grew into an important shipbuilding center and fishing port.  The city was home to the original Gorton's of Gloucester and its iconic "Gorton's Fisherman."  The city was also home to Clarence Birdeye's company, The General Seafood Corporation.  Birdseye is considered the founder of the frozen food industry.  His inventions were so successful, he sold his company and patents in 1929 for $22 million dollars (that's $300 million in today's dollars).  We hope you enjoy your trip to Gloucester!Small Town News--whose headline is it, anyway? @SmallTownNewsImprov
