God and Election - Romans 9

The doctrine of election has become a serious issue causing contentions in contemporary times such that it requires addressing What is election? And how does this affect our view of God? Who is correct; Arminians or Calvinists? Is election a new doctrine or it has always existed? How does this relate to predestination and Gods foreknowledge? Is God unjust in electing or choosing people for salvation?
