God in Flesh // Week 3 // Jesus Prays in Gethsemane Matthew 26:36-38 NIV36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”—1) The WITH     —Matthew 18:19-20 NIV19 “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree (are unified) about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”—James 5:16 NIV16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”—Colossians 4:2 NIV2 Devote yourselves to prayer,  being watchful and thankful.—Ephesians 1:16-19a16 I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him,18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of His power toward us who believe…—Matthew 26:40-41 NIV40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”—3) The WALKING    —Matthew 26:42-44 NIV42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.—Matthew 26:44-46 NIV44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”—James 1:22a NLT22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Questions: 1. Do you have trustworthy people that you pray with? If not, what is keeping you from that and how can you overcome it? 2. What does it mean to be watchful in prayer? How can you practice that in your prayer time? 3. Has God spoken to you about a specific assignment in this season? Are you actively walking that out? If not, what are two things you can do to begin operating in obedience to what He has for you?
