"Moloch" means king. Moloch worship was state worship a god claiming total jurisdiction, and therefore entitled to total sacrifice. When the state demands more than the tithe, it isn't overreach. It's a rival claim to deity. Conscription, expropriation, cradle-to-grave rule the children still pass through the fire, only the altar has changed. Every society that makes man king ends by sacrificing man.
