Most people assume that compassion and economic prosperity pull in opposite directions. The Torah says they don't. God's design presents an economic vision built on interest-free loans, debt cancellation, and other commandments that seem, at first glance, to be acts of compassion alone. But economist Dr. Meir Tamari argues that they are also sound economic policy. By helping people remain independent instead of trapped in poverty, the Torah reduces the need for charity, preserves dignity and self-worth, strengthens the entire economy, and creates greater prosperity for everyone - rich and poor alike. God's commandments are not only morally right. They are designed to help human beings and human societies flourish.
