What is the church? a. Globally it is the body of Christ – Col 1:18-24, Eph 5:23,30, Rom 12:4-5, 1Cor 12:12-27. b. There should be a togetherness (around the truth) amongst the body – Eph 1:10, 2:5-6, 21-22, Phil 3:17, 1Thess 4:17. Paul rebukes Corinth for their division when coming together - 1Cor 1:10, 11:17-18 c. Locally it is assemblies of the body of Christ gathered together – 1Cor 4:17, 7:17, Act 14:23 2. What it is not a. It is not a business – people make millions off the church, make it their career, work for their church – 1Tim 3:1,3,8. b. There are no positions of secretary, song leader, choir leader, program director, youth minister found in the scripture as we are all called to serve – Eph 4:1-6. If the minister of spiritual things receives money it should be out of a heart of charity from those being ministered to – 1Tim 5:17-18, 1Cor 9:7-15, 2Cor 9:6-8. c. It is not a entertainment center, fun zone, social club – 1Cor 3:1-3 – There is nothing wrong with fun, but it is not the purpose of the church. d. It is not a place to keep traditions of men or rituals – Col 2:8, 18:23, Gal 4:9-11. 2. A Church is more than study group a. Study is an important function of a church but a church should stand upon and teach the truth – 1Tim 3:15, Phil 1:27, Eph 6:11-13, Gal 5:1. b. A church has positions – Pastor/Bishop, deacon – Phil 1:1, 1Tim 3:1-2, 8-13 – To set things in order and call out false teaching – Acts 20:17-38, Titus 1-2:1, Rom 16:17 c. A church is where you come together to minister to one another - Rom 1:11-12, 15:29-33, Eph 4:14-16, 1Thess 5:9-28, 1Cor 14:5,12,26, Col 3:16 d. And to minister without – 2Cor 5:16-21, Eph 2:10, Phil 2:12-16, Col 1:9-11, 2Tim 2:15,3:16-17, Titus 2:11-14 e. To grow in the doctrine – Eph 3:4, Col 4:16, 1Thess 5:17, 1Tim 4:13
