Gold Coast Winter Fishing: Bream, Flathead and Offshore Action Heat Up

Light westerlies and clear skies have kept conditions pretty friendly across the Coast today, with the Bureau of Meteorology calling it mostly sunny, cool in the morning and mild through the day. According to BOM, sunrise was just after 6:30am with sunset around 5:00pm, so that short winter light window is making dawn and last light the prime bite periods. Tides from the Seaway tide tables showed an early morning high, a solid run-out through mid‑morning, and another push of water later this arvo. That dropping tide this morning had the Seaway and Jumpinpin really firing, with bait pushed off the flats and into the deeper edges. Reports from local tackle shops and charter skippers around the Broadwater say the bream are thick on the rock walls, jetty pylons and bridges. Plenty of good pan-sized fish with the odd 35cm model mixed in. Best baits have been **prawns**, **mullet strips** and **chook gut**, with lightly weighted rigs doing the damage. For lure fishos, small **2–3 inch curl-tail plastics**, tiny **vibes**, and **cranka-style crab lures** worked tight to structure are getting crunched. Flathead are starting to pick up with the cooler water. The banks around Wave Break, Crab Island, and up towards Sovereign have given up good numbers of 40–60cm fish, with the odd bigger girl released. Work **3–4 inch paddle‑tails** in natural or white baitfish colours, and **pink** has been a real standout. Drifting with **white pilchards** or **blue bait** on the run‑out has also produced steady bites. Inside the rivers, the Nerang and Coomera are holding plenty of school size **trevally**, **tailor**, and the occasional **mangrove jack** still hanging on in the deeper holes and around marinas. Early morning surface sessions with **small walk‑the‑dog lures** and **poppers** have produced some fun on trevs and choppers, especially when the bait is flicking on top. Offshore, when the wind and swell have allowed, crews have found **snapper**, **pearl perch**, and mixed reefies on the 24s and 36s. Pilchards, squid and strip baits are doing the job, while slow-pitch **jigs** and 5–7 inch **plastics** in pink and glow have worked well on the deeper reefs. A few winter **mackerel** and **cobia** have also been reported cruising the bait schools. If you’re heading out tomorrow, I’d be lining up the following hot spots: - **Gold Coast Seaway walls and nearby rock bars**: great for bream, tailor, trevally and the odd jewie on the turn of the tide. Fish lightly weighted baits or hop small plastics and vibes along the bottom. - **Jumpinpin Bar and surrounding channels**: prime for flathead, bream and tailor on the run‑out. Drift the edges with plastics or slow‑troll hardbodies along the drop‑offs. Best all‑round lures right now: 3–4 inch **paddle‑tail soft plastics** in natural or pink, small **vibes**, and compact **metal slugs** for tailor and trevs. Best baits: fresh **prawns**, **mullet fillet**, **white pilchards**, and **beach worms** if you’re hitting the surf gutters for dart and whiting.
