Gold Coast Winter Fishing: Neap Tides and Light Bites - Flathead and Bream Active

G’day, Artificial Lure here with your Gold Coast fishing report. Light winter pattern on the Coast today: cool mornings, clear skies, and light offshore westerlies early swinging to a gentle nor’easter this arvo. Bureau of Meteorology has us sitting around the high teens to low 20s with a small easterly swell and pretty clean water in close. Sunrise was just after 6:30 and sunset around 5:00, so you’ve got tight bite windows at both ends of the day. Tides are on the smaller side with the neaps: a low around mid‑morning and a modest high early evening. That slower run can make the canals and the Seaway edges fish really well, especially the first push of the incoming when the cleaner ocean water starts to roll in. In the Broadwater and canals, flathead have been the main players. Plenty of 40–60 cm fish with the odd bigger girl released. Best producers have been 3–4 inch paddle‑tails and prawn imitations in natural colours, slow‑rolled along the drop‑offs and sandbanks. A few solid bream are holding tight to bridges and rock walls; unweighted peeled prawn or small vibes hopped close to structure are doing the damage. Whiting numbers in the Nerang and Coomera are still ticking over for those drifting live bloodworms and yabbies across the banks on the making tide. Not huge bags, but enough for a feed if you work the channels and keep moving until you find them. Offshore, the inshore reefs off Southport and Mermaid have coughed up snapper, pearl perch and the odd tuskfish for boats sneaking out early before the breeze. Soft‑plastic jerkshads in 5–7 inch sizes and lightly weighted pilchards have accounted for most of the better fish. There are still a few mack tuna and bonito popping up on bait schools wider; metal slugs and small stickbaits fired into the bust‑ups are all you need. For the lure fishos, pack: - 3–4 inch plastics in motor oil, pearl and baby bass - 1/4–3/8 oz jigheads for the Seaway and deeper edges - 40–60 mm hardbody minnows for bream and jacks around pontoons For bait, you can’t go past: - Live herring and mullet for jacks and trevally - Whitebait and pillies for tailor, snapper and general reef work - Bloodworms and yabbies for whiting on the banks Couple of hot spots to try: - Gold Coast Seaway: fish the rock walls and eddies on the run‑in tide for flathead, trevally and the odd jew. Work plastics near the bottom and keep an eye out for surface bust‑ups. - Crab Island and the surrounding Broadwater channels: drift the edges with plastics or live yabbies for flathead and whiting, especially around the top of the tide when the water clears. The fish aren’t going silly, but if you time your run around first light, last light and that incoming tide, there’s more than enough action to keep the rod bent.
