Steven Chu is a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and professor of physics and of molecular and cell biology at the University of California-Berkeley. He was previously at Stanford and Bell Laboratories. At Stanford, he helped start Bio-X, a multidisciplinary initiative linking the physical and biological sciences with engineering and medicine. In 2009 Prof. Chu was appointed the 12th United States Secretary of Energy.
