"Goldfin and Silvertail" is a short story about Nelly, a girl forbidden from swimming who wishes herself into the sea — and gets exactly what she asked for. When a magical Great Seagull grants her wish to become a mermaid, she joins two enchanting companions named Goldfin and Silvertail in their underwater world. But the sea proves cold in ways Nelly never expected: the mermaids have no hearts, no mothers, and no understanding of love.
