Good news for Strandhill, Bundoran and Killybegs in latest IBAL Report concerning beaches.
The annual survey of coasts and inland waterways by business group Irish Business Against Litter shows the majority of areas attaining ‘clean’ status, among them Strandhill beach in Sligo, Bundoran Beach in Donegal and Killybegs Harbour also in Donegal. 33 beaches, harbours, rivers and their immediate environs were monitored by An Taisce on behalf of IBAL in June and July. 17 were deemed ‘clean’, a 50% rise on the previous survey, while the number of areas branded ’littered’ fell from 11 to just 3. Again, no area was placed in the lowest category “heavily littered”. The An Taisce report for Strandhill stated: “While 'No Swimming is permitted on the Beach', Strandhill is a very popular and busy destination for surfers and walkers etc. The overall impression was of a well presented and maintained environment with an abundance of relevant signage. The report found that the broken fencing at the dunes will need attention while the overall impression with regards to litter was a good Bundoran beach and Killybegs Harbour was also deemed to be clean to European Norms Irish Business Against Litter spokesperson Conor Horgan says Strandhill is among one of the cleanest beaches in the Country
