Date: 11.22.09 Speaker: Kristian Martens Texts: Genesis 1-3:19, Proverbs 2,4,14, Ephesians 5:21-33 I Corinthians 11:7, 16:13, Colossians 3:18, 1 Peter 3:7 Summary: As we study the God-given gift of sexuality, it is essential to look at our God-directed gender as it relates to others and to God. We were not designed as gender-less robots - but male & female. Equal in value & worth - but unique & distinct in many ways. While historically men have held a high place in society - a position often abused - ours is a culture where masculinity is in crisis. Boys are growing up without positive role models - and often without a father. The media portrayal of men tends towards either chauvinist bullies or - more commonly - irresponsible cowards. Contrast that with our design as men: the very essence of masculinity is courage & responsibility. We need to hear what the Bible teaches about men as it relates to being a husband and a father - as well as a follower of Jesus. In this sermon, we will look at the historical & current state of masculinity in Canada - and then begin to lay out a bibilical, Gospel-centred model for men. Starting in Genesis, well see our original purpose - and why everything now seems to war against this design. Well identify the common sins of men - and end with a call to Gospel-centred dudeliness from 1 Corinthians 11 & 16.
