Gospel — Swami Atmaghanananda

Recorded at the Vedanta Society of Western Washington on July 5, 2016.In this introductory talk on The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Atmaghanananda reflects on the enduring spiritual significance of Mahendranath Gupta's record of Sri Ramakrishna's teachings and the transforming power of keeping holy company. Beginning with the story of the author's first meeting with Sri Ramakrishna, he explains how sincere contact with an illumined soul can dispel confusion, awaken devotion, and redirect the course of a person's life. Drawing on the Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads, and the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna, he describes Sanatana Dharma as the eternal truth underlying all existence and emphasizes that its goal is direct experience of the Divine rather than intellectual understanding alone.Swami Atmaghanananda explains that devotion to God gradually purifies the mind, softens the ego, and enables seekers to live in the world without becoming bound by it. Through examples from the lives of Sri Ramakrishna and his disciples, including Mahendranath Gupta and Girish Chandra Ghosh, he illustrates how love of God transforms character naturally and leads to inner freedom. He concludes by encouraging regular study of The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna as a means of remaining in the living presence of the Master, allowing his teachings and example to deepen spiritual awareness and foster awareness of our inherent divinity.
