Graveyard Detour

This song tells the tale of our guy who is on his way to a party and decides to take a short cut through a graveyard. He is assailed by zombies and has to fight his way out, including ripping an arm off and using it as a club. [Verse 1] I left for the party Tie loose, boots on Took the long way Thought I’d be gone Cut through the yard Past the cracked stone rows Moon on the markers Cold wind blow [Pre-Chorus] Then I heard them Scratch and groan Hands in the dirt I should’ve gone home Feet in the mud They found my trail I turned one around And I tore off his rail [Chorus] Graveyard detour (hey!) I came back mean Graveyard detour Took one arm clean Graveyard detour (hey!) Make way, make way I beat through the dead And I showed up late [Verse 2] They came from the fences Jaw slack, eyes dead One lost his temper Right over my head I swung that arm Like a busted club Clobbered my way out Through the sludge and the grub [Pre-Chorus] Then the gate lights Flared in sight I ran for the bassline Ran for the night Blood on my shirt Mud on my shoes I had one story And I had to lose [Chorus] Graveyard detour (hey!) I came back mean Graveyard detour Took one arm clean Graveyard detour (hey!) Make way, make way I beat through the dead And I showed up late [Bridge] At the door they laughed Said, “What’s your excuse?” I said, “Ask the dead boys They’ll tell you the truth” They stared at the bruise At the dirt on my face I said, “You can deny it But I ran from the grave” [Final Chorus] Graveyard detour (hey!) I came back mean Graveyard detour Took one arm clean Graveyard detour (hey!) Now hear me say I fought my way out And I’m here today (Graveyard detour) (You can’t say I lied) (Graveyard detour) (I wore that night)
