Gravité No. 1

from Dave Bradley · host Dave Bradley

Earlier this week, I was listening to BBC Radio4's Soul Music episode about Eric Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1, a piece of music I've always loved. I was going to arrange and record a guitar version of it, but got sidetracked by a delay effect that seemed to generate all this pulsing rhythm. I'd started with a sub-dominant maj7 and a tonic maj7(like Satie) but then rebooted it to just a simple Am to G shuttle. The guitar solo was then using a delay with some pitch shifting to generate echoes on the fifths of the initial notes. Add a bit of bass thuddery and mix it down and this is what you get. I originally called this "Circle of Fifths", then "Berlin of fifths" even though it has nothing to do with the circle of fifths, nothing to do with Berlin. I was going to rename it Gravitational Waves, but have opted for "Gravité No. 1" which is what it really ought to have been called from the start. The photo was the view earlier in the week from my office/studio window.
