Beneath the joking, it is clear that their bond has survived the difficult year apart.Back at his parents’ apartment, Birdie is warmly welcomed again by the boy’s mother. Soon they return to Birdie’s house, where the boy admits he often visits when she is away. He talks with Miss Mary, wanders through the garden, and spends time in Birdie’s room simply because it reminds him of her. The confession moves Birdie deeply: even in her absence, he has kept a place for her in his life.The long Memphis summer unfolds slowly. The boy works during the day, while Birdie fills her time swimming, seeing friends, visiting the cinema, and recovering from the intensity of school.
