In which we embark upon the bustling and somewhat grim journey from a provincial town to the labyrinthine heart of London, where the imposing presence of Mr Jaggers’s offices and the peculiar characters surrounding him paint a vivid picture of legal and city life. We are introduced to the curious landscape of Smithfield and Little Britain, awash with the scents and sounds of the metropolis, as well as the strict and commanding figure of Mr Jaggers, who sets the tone for the arrangements to come.
