In 1260, Great Zimbabwe was still a rising power, but its supremacy was not yet assured. When the Torwa kingdom to the southwest raided Zimbabwe's royal herds, a young Mambo named Chisamuturu faced his first great test. This episode charts a forgotten conflict — the Cattle Raid of 1260 — that reshaped the political landscape of southern Africa. We follow Chisamuturu's calculated response: not a head-on war, but a series of targeted counter-raids, a strategic marriage alliance that broke the Torwa confederation, and a new system of royal cattle branding that became a symbol of Mambo authority.
