Were off to the Greeks. So cool fun fact, Charlestons first Greek immigrant was Maria Gracia Turnbull, who may have been the first Greek woman in North America. Maria and her husband Andrew arrived in Charleston in 1781. The Greek Orthodox Church has always been the focal point of the local Greek community. In 1908 the first Greek Orthodox Liturgy was performed in St. Johns Episcopal Church. In March of 1911 The Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church was built. in 1960 Demetrios Liollio designed a school building behind the Hellenic Center.
