At the age of eighteen Bartolomeo joined the order of Camaldolese and recieved the sacrament of Holy Orders in 1787. Cappelari became a Cardinal on March 21, 1825 before he received the ordination as bishop. After Pius VIII died a conclave ensued. They unexpectedly elected Cappellari on February 2, 1831 and he chose the name Gregory XVI. He notably canonized St. Alphonsus Liguori. As pope he also elected bishops from native people in the New World instead of from mainland Europe. Gregory XVI died on June 1, 1846 at age 80 and buried in Saint Peter's Basilica. Pope Pius IX succeeded him. Thank you for listening to Habemus Papam.
