We're making an ad. An apping an ad. This is where I think if we're doing it right, Alec Baldwin comes in. He says a couple things.
He listens to the podcast every week. Has he been canceled? Was Alec Baldwin the one who killed somebody? I hear Gary Sinise is free.
Okay, great. He hasn't worked since 2020. So what would be the script that we would have Gary Sinise for if an apping through happy hour podcast? Listen to this damn show.
Damn it. An apping through happy hour podcast brought to you by Geeksy. Real life, real drama, real time. I'm Gary Sinise.
That's the ad. That's the ad. That's the ad. Meanwhile, in New Jersey.
Summer, so what talking points do you want to hit on in this week's episode? Well, Jackie, let's talk about how the film addresses the patriarchy. Ooh, and representation of marginalized people. Ooh, ooh, and even philosophical ramifications of good versus evil and horror.
We can point out the triangle boobs, talk about the blood splatter, and ugh, the practical effects. Ugh. And also the male gaze? My gaze at the males.
Hi-oh! From feminism to fan-girling, the Jersey ghouls cover all the bases apart from a woman's perspective. New episodes are uploaded every other Sunday. The Jersey ghouls define us on social media and your favorite podcasting app.
Is that so 150? You know what that means? Vegetable Grimlin. We're joined by the podfather himself, podcasting royalty, the man that gave horror movie night its life, Jonathan London.
Someone accidentally poured some water on him and the three of us exploded out of his back. And unfortunately for him, we ate after midnight. So here we are. Call the hoaxer, because it's time to talk about Grimlins do the new batch this week on Horror Movie Night.
John, thank you so much for joining us. Excuse the talk about fucking Grimlins, I know this. We've been trying for so long, a story about the first year of Horror Movie Night. Scott Adam and I watched Chud because John was like, I want to come on the show.
You guys did an episode of Chud, right? No, we never did. We were like, I'm here for you, bud. Oh, well, episode 200 is going to happen.
We're going to have episode 200 planned out and it's already going to be way better. And you can follow that too. But it's not going to happen. Let me count the ways.
We're like a post about this, Chud. Story is my method. Takes me seriously. What do I say?
It's because Matt has some social cue issues. I don't know if you've ever noticed this about Matt. Yeah, a little bit. There's a lot to unpack about this movie.
So let's start. So real quick, because I know that talking to my brother, he was not blown away. I'm blown away by this movie as an adult. There's a quick thing about this movie that I think is really important, which is to know that for like five or six years they were begging Joe Dante to do what Grillings do.
And it basically was like, I only make this movie if you give me total creative control to do whatever the fuck I want. And he basically just made a parody of the first movie. And I think it's awesome. Like, I love this sequel.
I think this is one of my favorite scene guys. You guys watched it. I actually watched it with every watch with the whole commentary track on. And he tells a lot of stories about how at one point they just were like, you know what?
Well, let's make it without them. Because they just wonder about it. I was really wanted a sequel to Gremlins because it did so well. And finally, just by happenstance, somebody saw Joe on the lot and there and was like, would you want to do it?
He's like, yeah, fine. And he suggested the right or he did it. And he wanted to make fun of how bad parodies are. Or not parodies, but because that's a sequel.
So it's not just making fun of Gremlins being one of the sequels period. It's the jaws to the revenge of Gremlins. Yeah. And if you guys listen to episode one, is it 484 of Geekscape?
I basically talk about how I'm coming on the show this weekend, which is a little- Yeah, thanks for spoiling it. It's a little bit shifted depending on when you guys post 150. So if you listen 150, you may have to go back a bit on the Geekscape. But I don't know.
So excited. Then we just started talking to Gremlins for about 50 minutes. A one hour show. We like to be like Gremlins.
And we talk about Gremlins 3 and is that- Oh, sign me up. I'm not Joe Dante. Sign me up for that Gremlins 3. And you guys have seen what Chris Columbus has been saying about Gremlins 3 and how dark and it's all of the corner of Jackdown.
And actually going to do a Gremlins 3, because I thought that was just a joke. I don't know. I don't know. I don't want to mess up your format.
So you tell me where you want to talk about Gremlins 3. Yeah, like you're walking- We can do whatever the fuck we want. It's episode 150. The gluck-up.
The thing is, I don't know how much of this is true. But, Zach Galagan was talking about how Chris Columbus is now wanting to do the Gremlins 3. And he has this darker, weirder script. And I'm just shaking my head.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. I don't think we need like- Yeah. We don't need- Do we need Chris for a long- We don't need Chris for a long- Ex-Niner's Gremlins. Well, here's the thing that I would argue with it.
Oh, God. Well, here's my thought on that. Just bare bones on what you just told me. I would love a dark Gremlins not in tone but in violence.
Like I want the Gremlins from Gremlins. Not the Gremlins too, Gremlins who are like, ha ha, you might die when we fuck with you. I want the Gremlins that are trying to throw knives at your face and put your hand in a blender or, you know, stuff like that. Or driving a fucking backhoe into your house, you know?
You're not still a children's movie. I mean, children's movie 1984. Is the reason we got Gremlins either team. So I think that things can shift a little bit.
If we get a hard R, Remlins? Oh. It's called Goonies and Critters. What about us is we want to give you a hard R movie for Batman and Superman?
It was like, yeah. Because we don't want to make money off of children. Alright, so let's talk about the movie. So movie kicks off with this Looney Tunes opening and right out the gate you kind of know that this ain't your daddy's Gremlins sequel.
That's exactly what I thought. It's just- There is a video of us, whatever. Yeah. You can't know your dad.
So we meet very quickly via a video. Well, the cool thing about that opening is Chuck Jones did it. Yeah. That is original Chuck Jones animation at the beginning of that movie.
And I think it was Mel Blank alive at the- No, no. I can't remember what he died before. No. He died before.
Ah. Because I thought I saw Patricia Arquette in a cameo in this movie. Like I was so convinced that Patricia Arquette was in a movie that I went through pages and pages of facts about Gremlins still. Patricia Arquette is not in this movie.
The movie kicks off inside of the store where Gizmo comes from. And Daniel Clamp, who is easily the best character in the movie, has some henchmen bring in a video of himself trying to pitch selling this building so he can build a bigger, better building. And like if Daniel Clamp was our president right now, that would be great. Yeah.
Unfortunately, we have who Daniel Clamp was based on instead. Yeah. I mean, he's not a bad guy either. Like of course the movie.
And they have just kind of a child. The coolest thing about the henchmen is that's Robert Piccardo from Star Trek, who was also assigned at the G.C. booth at Comic Con. Wait, wait, wait, wait.
Were you there and did you just ask about Gremlins? I was there and Matt Callie was there. It was part of Space Command. Yeah, but we're not allowed near that table during Space Command.
Yeah, guys, there was a group that would sign up the G.C. booth and just like basically take over the booth for the hour and Robert Piccardo was part of that group. And had I been refreshed on the fact that he's in Gremlins too? Like, I want to let him walk away without like really.
Yeah, you wouldn't have actually let him sign up. No, I'm like, hey, how would occasionally like to sexy Gremlins? Oh, I bad part of this movie is so uncomfortable even worse now. Like it's uncomfortable when you're a child in the 90s and you're like, why do I feel this way about a green monster?
And then you're like, why is he letting this happen? Yeah, because it's so unnecessary. The movie ended. Just end the movie.
We had to add that last little bit. It made me show. And you know he's going to get her wet. No, no, no, no.
I'm going to get's the keep this. So yeah, if I didn't know you, I would be like this guy. This was the mistake. Do I even know me?
I can just see you like holding a skull like out like who was I? The Old Man dies off camera and they tear down his shop and this releases Gizmo into the wild, but he's quickly captured by scientists. And we meet Billy and Kate. They're in New York.
Want to find something weird? You have to go downtown. Which is also what you could say about the female Gremlin, right? Yeah, I mean, I keep from interrupting like this is not where we go on our takes, because I wrote so many notes.
Like I'm just letting Matt get to the synopsis, right? It's not going to happen. No, it's not going to happen. Well, to be fair, with this movie, the synopsis pretty much stops as soon as the Gremlins come out.
Yeah, the movie is so thin. The movie is really thin. And that's what our Gremlins. Yeah, the thing that happened in the second movie that wasn't in the first was Rick Baker took over on special effects.
And he made Gizmo walk, which is something you don't see in the first movie. Like you actually see him run away from the store when they start. First off, the Old Man dies and they start to throw us in the store apart. No one went in there to see that there were live animals.
Yeah, but here's the thing about the only thing that did not age magnificently in this film is Gizmo walking. Because it's very obviously green screen and they did a good job for what is this, 93 when this came out? 90, 93. 90, okay.
They did a good job for 1990. Not as good as back in the future too. Which came out before. I know what I'm saying.
They didn't do quite as well with the technology that was relatively available at the time. But it still, I mean, the practical effects are so good that I can overlook the fact that Gizmo walking is a little dated. Yeah, actually what's funny with Rick Baker becoming the special effects person is they actually show a clip from his first ever movie, Octoman. Oh, I wondered what that was.
I knew that was it. It's all an attack of the Octopus people. It's called Octoman. I love the character.
Fred is fantastic. I think the outlet was grandpa monster guy. Yeah. So we're watching that and my friend turns to me because I made my friends watch it with me because I was just in a very sad mood after watching the first two movies after myself.
And that scene comes up and he goes, where are you watching this movie next? And I go, no, I don't think it's a real movie. Look online, see that it's called Octoman and it is currently in my watch list for Octopus. Ah, yes, hilarious.
There's a funny story in the commentary. How Rick Baker told us a lot of commentary. He told us I knew the story about how that was his first movie. And when he created those monsters that you see briefly that black and white screen or whatever that TV screen, it's got to be in color because Clamp One's color.
The producers insisting that Rick Baker's creature was going to be shot only at night and that scene is fully in the day. Rick Baker just got really depressed because he didn't want that monster to even cry. Well, you mentioned the color thing and they make a call back to that at one point in a loudspeaker that goes, don't miss Casablanca tonight. Now in color with a happier end.
I had never caught that. They called so many things that ended up happening. You know what I mean? They just have cable has so many ridiculous channels now and they had all of them on the network.
Is there an archery channel? There's not yet an archery channel but who watches what you call it for real? There's an archery channel on YouTube so maybe this is even more. Yeah, very ahead of its time.
I love the idea of the automated voice that just says things and I have two different quotes from it written down. The one is, Mr. Welcome to the men's room. That's not the fire.
Yeah, fire. The Untamed element. The people screwing up forests. Right now, this building is on fire.
The other thing is like, all of us are still alive when they're in this movie. We learned them to be in this. Wait, I played the grandpa monster. Like the maybe grandpa monster was still alive when they made grandmas do and they were like, no.
I still stand by saying that Daniel Klampe is my favorite character in this movie but I have to give a shout out that Christopher Lee's performance in this is so brilliant. Every time he's on the screen, just like taking a tissue from the... Yes. From Jenny Sweeney and like...
It's a joyous. It's Pat. He took one of the growth serums in Pat. And apparently when he got on set, he apologized to Joe Daunce for being an alling two.
Oh my God! He does that in the commentary. He says it's a verse that he does come over to be an apologize for being an alling two. I'm like, alling two.
You're talking about who plays Klampe is amazing. He, if you like, remember Smallville, he was like, so there's bad. Which is actually how I saw it. Oh wow.
I remember him from Scrooge where he basically plays the exact same catch. He plays the same universe. He is so, he's so manic. And like, no matter what's happening, he's just up, like he's a child.
Like he's just so upbeat about everything. He's like, what bad? That would bev been if his parents hadn't gotten killed. I love that he has, and apparently this was based on something that was real, that he has a end of the world tape that he's just got prepared and ready.
Like he's watching it and getting teary on it. CNN actually has one. That's why they wrote that movie. There is a CNN tape for that they have for when their end of the world is confirmed.
Who are those assholes who just watched TV? What else do you have to do? Do you see them? They just see themselves?
It reminds me of that. I think it was Dana Carvey, that SNL skit where they kept having the different takes of the president how he got killed. And he's like, all right, now let's do Pack of Wolves. The president was eaten by a pack of wolves.
He went to go in vacation for a week and they needed to have as much coverage as possible. That's really funny. God, 90s SNL was perfect. So Billy finds Gizmo.
We breaks him out of the little science lab. And then he gets wrecked by a malfunctioning water fountain because it's all of these maguis to appear and they get locked in a building and start eating. Gizmo is a fan. Gizmo is aware of the problem.
He goes and hides. He's just a little dumb. Yeah. Well, he's just a little sheltered animal.
Did we just skip over the cow with the helmet and the giant brain? Yeah. Like, there's a slice of life incorporated. Like, in that Christopher Lee's lab, there's a walking by with a giant, with a cow with a giant thing on his head, like a giant helmet and then somebody walks around with a giant brain and I'm like, what's happening?
It's so absurd with all the things in that lab. And again, it's only made better by like Christopher Lee's very stoic evil scientist performance. What does he say when he gets it? He's like, this came in the mail for you.
He goes, oh, I hope it's my malaria. You also get to see Gizmo dance? Yes. I hate that Gizmo dancing scenes with the fucking twin.
His room's really because his whole pet is to like make them like entertained by his dancing. I always forget about that. The fact that he's actually trying to run away. I thought he was just like, oh, I like music.
I want to dance. He's like, oh, wait, I should get away. Not as if Billy's really hot coworker who tries to do some. Oh, you mean?
Marla. Marla has long red curls. She was actually the blonde, the drunk blonde in 60 candles. That's awesome.
Oh, it's so angry. Yeah, because I was like, what do I know where from? And she didn't do a whole lot of, she did like some soap operas and stuff like that, but she doesn't have a very extensive like time. Did you guys notice that scene where Billy is telling his girlfriend, Phoebe Kate, like, you know what I mean?
He's telling her like, hey, I'm gonna have to work late tonight. I have to go like, you know, and she's working at her security desk or whatever it is. In the background, it's the women's locker room. What is happening?
I have an old one. There's a woman walking around in her bra and panties. There's a dude right there in the lobby or whatever, the gym area, I guess. There's like half naked women walking around the background with lockers.
I'm like, wait, what? Clamp. We're gonna end up with so many lawsuits. He's gonna clamp down.
He's gonna clamp down. He's going to. All right. So we also have to talk about the fact that Henry Gibson gets fired for smoking in the farewell.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Henry Gibson in this movie.
It was like a kind of a favor or something. Yeah. I don't know. Maybe he and Dif Miller were just like drinking beers one night.
You know what? We should be in fucking Rembrandt. That's what John Dif said was a favor. Having him in the movie.
He was like, yeah, it's a little cameo favor. Why? Why does Henry Gibson need this? No, no, no, it was a favor to John Dontay.
Yeah. It was like, hey, we're shooting gremlins too. You like, hang out? Sure.
Scott's touched on a little bit, but man, the gremlins look so good in that, like, when that first gremlin explodes out of the control table and attacks the dude, it looks so good. Like all the gremlins look fantastic. They look better and more detailed in this movie. I don't know if it's just because the film stock is better or the trans...
I think it's because they have more personality than they did in the first movie. The first movie you had the main gremlin and then just a bunch of generic gremlins, whereas this one, every single one of them is distinctly different in their design. Yeah. And even the boxy moves on really, like, insanely bigger.
Well, and also Rick Baker got to go balls up to the wall on these characters. I would love to see, and maybe John, you can tell me that it's in the special feature of something. I want to see a 45 minute talk on how they did the baby gremlins inside the backs of the gremlins when they're like, you can see them moving and shit. It is just so good.
And so detailed, there's that... Yeah. There are multiple close-ups of the backs. And they're...
That is really big. Like if it's close about a back, that gremlin is probably like... Yeah, right, of course. That back is probably the size of your dresser.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
That's the thing is like, I'll just be a doc about that. Because some of... I don't think they just put it on those small ones. I think it's animatronic.
Because a couple of a whole lot. Everything else is like, with their melting and stuff like that, they're just like taking air out of them like balloons. Yeah. It's still incredible.
But they're still so goopy. I love how goopy... I love the goopy-est kids movie of all time. And you know that's my favorite thing about Orr, about Monster.
I even wrote down the... The gremlin through the shredder is like... Oh, it's really old. That's so gross.
I love the fact that... Yeah. I love that he's like, oh well. That's why I never used those.
Like, he's like, he's never a bad guy. He's like a total prick for having this... For being basically a trump surrogate. Because that's what he is.
He's supposed to be like this magnet. But he is smarter and always upbeat. Oh, yeah. Ten Turner's a better.
Because he's not a complete reptile of a human. Um, what he like is so proactive. Like he was a monster and he's like, whoa, everyone in my shirt. You know?
He's like securing the building outside. He's like, you know, the police force. I love the fact that he gets his riot chair. And he gets it after they're all done.
Well, my favorite part is that there's literally this terrible thing happening. And he goes, I can use my secret escape. Like he's Batman. Did we talk about the Canadian restaurant?
Oh, no. I was just going to say, I love that scene because that's all I want. I got to flood you the whale for my birthday cake. And the only thing that would top it is if I got a chocolate mousse in the shade of a chocolate mousse.
Well, the Marla takes Billy to this Canadian restaurant to like, you know, whoa him. It's a douche and it's ridiculous. And later in the movie, there's a gremlin wearing the Canadian outfit. Yeah.
Yeah. This movie has so much great internal logic, but I have one question. Is Joel Cola a Canadian thing? No, he has Joel to the US.
Yeah. Joel Twig. I know, but I mean, like, is it more of a thing in Canada? I don't know.
Because there's a Jolt in this. And then in the next, we're going to discuss like it's so weird. They're like visibly on display. The other crazy thing to talk about the Perma gremlins looking at the women's legs.
Yes. Like, and then the fact that like two of those two gremlins are clearly George and Lenny from Myse and Men. Yeah. Oh my god.
I had not realized that. Yeah, they're clearly like George and Lenny and like one of their horror. I mean, that would be gremlin who's like, I's Rob Boggley. And yet, Phoebe Kate's thinks it's Gizmo.
Like she's meant Gizmo. She knows. Yeah. Yeah.
OK, so I love I absolutely love Phoebe Kate's. If you look at my wife, you'd understand why I love Phoebe Kate. I mean, like there's nothing not to like about her. I wish I was as rich as Kevin Klein's.
Like Kevin Klein and Phoebe Kate's. We've been for like 20 plus years. They're amazing. But I mean, I want to say Mary to Phoebe Kate's too.
And I would do what it takes. That's why I'm trying to say Mary to Phoebe Kate's. She's like, I'm starting to be in the producer. I remember.
But anyway, so I love how dumb Phoebe Kate says. Her character is so. Oh, dude. When she tells me Abe Lincoln's birthday story, I lose it every time.
Oh, good. That's my favorite part of this movie. Even more so than vegetable gremlin, even more so than 300 gremlins getting electrocuted to mud. I love her Abe Lincoln story.
They aren't necessary to the plot, but they're just moments that I absolutely love. I love the TV chef getting drunker and drunker. I'm sorry. I have another one right there.
I think the one thing where I was like, these guys are just getting, they must have just been so high when they're making this movie. So he gets arrested, and then he's leaving jail. Hold on. What if when they're leaving jail?
Just the blindies go. The blindies go. But the blindies. The blindies are really amazing.
I like that Billy comes home from his day with Marlowe with lipstick all over his face. And nobody even tells him. He just has it over. And nobody's going to see that.
Dick Miller shows up. And he's got lipstick on his mouth. And Dick Miller is like, his entire town was almost burned to the ground by these fuckers. Yeah, he leaves Gizmo alone in his office.
Fuck him. He's an idiot. I realize this now is we're talking about the mimes and the cow and the brain. It's like, so many parts in this movie kind of feel like a live action version of any time Eddie Valiant is walking through a movie set in Who Frame Roger Rabbit.
And there's just a thousand things happening in the background. Is it back in 1990 as well? 89. So it was right around that same time.
The gods are pretty awesome. Like that sequence with the guy repairing the water faucet is like, you know, like the guys are pretty good in this movie and they build and the callbacks are there. I got to respect these guys. He could tell like why he would want like Chuck Jones to do his animation because so much this movie is designed like a cartoon.
It just has a lot of internal logic where it's like, we're not going to set these rules ridiculous. But we're not going to break them. We're going to actually increase them over time. Well, and like I love that he literally calls up Leonard Moulton who gave his movie a scathing zero stars when he did the first Gremlins and was like, hey, I want you to be in the Gremlins sequel reading your review as the Gremlins kill you.
So I have a question about that because I know that logic isn't really factoring in very much to Gremlins to the new batch. But how? OK, no one knows what Maguire. No one knows what Gremlins are in this world.
Yet there's a fucking movie of Gremlins and Leonard Moulton is holding. Yeah, there's a Deadpool stuff going on. There's a Deadpool fourth world. It's a fourth world logic.
But like at least Deadpool is that's part of his superpower, you know, like that he can. I think this was just him getting the ultimate fuck you and shockingly, Gremlins 2 featuring Leonard Moulton got two stars from Leonard Moulton over the original that got zero. Oh, dude. Guys, I know we mentioned like clamped that scene where Billy and Robert Ricardo clamped to Clamps office.
The very opening of that first shot is clamped at the looking through a telescope. And there are like, he's looking down at the Chrysler building through the clouds. Yeah, actually really funny. I had not thought about that.
If you look at the reflection in the telescope that he has in his office, he's above every building in New York and the clouds by a lot. And you realize that you never see like a bush out of this building. But it would reach like planes would have to go around. I want to say that of all the Gremlins in this movie, there are so many different Gremlins.
I always forget how much I love the look of the background. He looks so fucking awesome in this movie. Yeah, Dick Miller had something to say about that. I love that battle though.
That battle is so clever. Yeah, except nobody notices the flag. Gremlin throws it in the concrete. The entire time it's like pulling on him down the street and swinging at the thing.
People are just walking around like they're going to work. It's New York. Man, you never seen a flag around the man. I'm trying to walk in there.
They are snowmen in New York in this movie. Like overly mean people. I'm showing her out of the way. Which is.
There's a mouse trap in their sandwich. Does that make it killer? Yeah, I have a question. She's just going like she's gone and he's wearing her like Shaw.
But so so Klam comes out and gets accosted by that specific Gremlin. I feel like her body is right there. And he's like, whoa, I just got Gremlin goo all over my time. Is there a scene where she's running where she's running into the bathroom or something with a mouse trap on her tongue?
Like I don't know how that works. I didn't see that one. I don't think it. Yeah, she just disappears.
And next thing you know, I guess the mouse trap took her head off. It just. I like the overly racist Asian guy. That's right.
That's wrong. I tongue from 16 candles. Well, oh yeah, he's got from UHF. He's just the same guy in a bunch of different movies because when I first noticed that I had to look it up is, you know, my guy Jason Segal, there's one scene when he's trying to get a room and she goes, well, I hope you enjoy your stay.
And I'm like, why does that Asian guy just randomly just smile like a nodding? Like so familiar? Yeah, he's the hotel manager who just sells and nods at one point. We've been talking about we've been talking about forgetting Sarah Marshall for like the last month of episode.
It's amazing. Yeah. And I don't like stereotypes, but the whole stereotypes with Asians and cameras, it's unfortunately true. It's my fault.
That's why I'm lost in cameras. Because he goes to Disney every month. Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
It's just turn your flash off. I get you travel. You travel. You want to make you want memories, turn the flash off.
So my favorite scene in this movie, I'm going to sit down. I'm going to quote it because it's great. OK, guys, listen up. You're good money to see this movie.
Let me go out in the theater. They want cold sodas, hot popcorn, and no monsters in the projection booth. You want to come up there myself? You think the Grimsters skin up against the holster?
Is it about you? I'd run the rest of Grimlins to right now. Sorry, folks. It won't happen again.
Eddie's wearing his belt, which is awesome. Oh, God, it's so good in this movie. And then there's the controversy of the VHS version of this movie. In which they replaced it with the Grimlins jumping into a John Wayne movie, but it starts off with like 30 seconds of static and there was enough people that shut off the tape thinking it was broken and returned into the video.
So they had to start putting a sticker explaining the joke on the front of it. It was that like post houses were having trouble with making copies of the movie because like regardless, you know, people thought the film was fucked up and you're making a transfer. They thought the tapes were messed up and you're doing it. Like, they're not saying it's like commentary.
There's a big, like they had problems with post houses doing their transfers. I saw this movie in 1990 over the summer when I was in Mexico visiting my family. And while I only went to the movie theaters and I could have sworn we got the John Wayne version. So I didn't see the whole COVID version until a bit later.
But for most of my life, I didn't know which was the real version. And I think the way it actually went was I did see the whole COVID version, but then I saw the John Wayne version and it all fucked up in my head. But that seems amazing. So I've told the story once before on the podcast, but I loved Grimlins as a kid.
So when Grimlins too came out, my uncle took me to see it. So I was fine and I saw Grimlins too in the theaters and I loved Hulk Hogan. So when that scene happens, I genuinely thought that Hulk Hogan was in my movie theater and got up on the seat like trying to find him. Jesus Christ.
What a idiot. Oh my God. You know, we got to also talk about another celebrity cameo that we met. The Peter Parlbartel.
Oh God, Parlbartel is so good as the snooty theater manager. He's snooty fucking everything. We just completely skipped over a few BKs in the elevator and there's a giant fucking drill bit that goes through the wall. Yes.
The drill bit is the size of a child. Little bit. I hear Joe's great. I bought a job.
The elevator joke itself is great where the Grimlins are recreating the emergency system. Yeah. That is a really and then you got the spider grip. Feel like Kate gets to interact with most of the best Grimlins actually.
Yeah. And I don't think we gave the listeners their due on the flying gremlin and how big billers throws at concrete and then the thing flies off and becomes a gargoyle. I think again, like it feels like you're watching cartoon sequences in this movie and the payoffs are really, really good. Yeah.
And that's a weird thing about this movie is that it feels like we talk a lot about the cocaine binge ideas that happen in a lot of the stuff that we discuss, but this feels like somebody sat down and was like, I have all these great ideas. Let's just make them into one movie. They're also out there and weird, but they all are also very wholesome. And I mean, that's the key in Pillscapes that they did last like a couple years ago.
Yeah. Yeah. You know, right now somewhere in LA fucking Jordan Peele is working on us and he sees this come up and he's like, he stops production and is like, I need to listen to him right now. Right now.
My buddy knows they work with me and D with is working is like sure running to Jordan Pills next thing. And it's, it sounds pretty cool. It sounds really cool. Don't tell me anything.
I don't want to know any suppose. I don't want to even read that. I'll tell you that because that's how you're going to have to watch it. Fine.
Okay. Red just to watch it. I don't care. The giant seed pod.
Oh, I love it. Yeah. I think another crazy thing from the science lab is just this giant seed pod. What's like that?
It's the body snatchers pod. Yeah. Does anybody, I know what the answer to this question is, but I'm going to quiz you guys. Do you know what Christopher Lee's character's name is in this movie?
No, Dr. Catherine. That's right. Did you say that?
I was like, you know that correctly? It's not. It's not as good as Jeffrey Combs's doctor's name in the guy. He plays Dr East.
So what do you think the logic is on keeping an electric grandma on hold? That's so much. I love that the government seems annoyed by the noise by the music. You're literally keeping an electric grandma, which defies physics, sadly, kills Christopher Lee's character and is going through the walls.
It's like, like on the phone and you trap it in a phone. It was like, what the fuck? Like Billy's Unactive Hero is almost like, like being, like he was being so forward thinking he thought that he could raise the phone and trap the thing in the phone. How did that work?
I got a question for you, John. So I listened to your episode with Cooper Barnes, where you talked about this. And when you mentioned that you were about to watch Gremlins, too, it kind of felt like, I remember liking it as a kid, but I don't know how this is going to go. Did you end up walking away very pleasantly surprised at how much fun this movie actually is?
Yeah, but it wears your ass out. Yeah. Like, like the movie is plot thin. Like it is, it does not add a whole lot.
Like Gremlins is really, I think Gremlins is a fucking really awesome movie. This movie is pretty thin and it's just gags. Yeah. And so like, if you don't enjoy the gags, you're just getting worn out by this movie because it's incessant.
I told my brother that I feel like this movie feels like if the state made a Gremlins movie, like it's just sketch, joke, sketch, joke, like nonstop. Once the once the Gremlins appear, it is basically a sketch comedy. It's fucking Amazon when on the moon or Kentucky Fried movie. Like that's what I'm talking about.
Yeah. It wears your ass out. But I love it. It's a short movie too.
It's actually not as short as you think it's like an hour and forty five. Like that's pretty long. It's like that's longer than most of the movies we want. Someone's like a manager and a queen, right?
Right. Waiting like knee jerk note of keeping under 90 minutes. Well, there's nothing wrong with a 90 minute movie. I think that we need to get back to that.
And that's kind of a longer, less. It doesn't matter what I'm writing. That's the first note. Get it under 90 pages.
I'm like, OK. I don't think that we need so many to our movies. And that's also because I love the Marvel movies, but I can barely watch an entire one in the movie theater because I have to pee. Yeah.
And you're gonna miss so much if you take two minutes to go take a whiz. Yeah. Yeah. I feel that's like the ones are the kind of longer or something that you've seen before.
Did infinity where was two hours and twenty minutes? It was two hours and thirty six minutes. That maybe I just ever feel like I had to go pee. But like the first time I'm drinking anything.
Like I was going to Black Panther. Let's be real. Let's be opening a coming to America. Oh, yeah.
But better. Yeah. I mean, the only thing that that movie doesn't have is which one is coming to America or trade places that has sold low in it. Come to America.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Black Panther does not have on on America.
Yeah. I was like, where's Erica Sal. Sal. Like, you know, like it would the Black Panther flies into what kind of the first time when he's like, this never gets old.
I'm like, except in Thor when you saw it or in Guardians when you saw it or in those other movies when you saw a guy fly a spaceship and a plate piece of CGI. I have one note about Grandma's doing that. I'm done. Two things.
Sorry, two. One, vegetable gremlin is obviously my favorite. He is so nice that he lets people pluck all his off of his head to make martini. I love that.
So you know, vegetarians are better people. Anyway, second of all, mind blowing. How many mandelas the voice of Gizmo? Yeah.
Yeah. That was a good movie. Yeah. It sounds like Bobby World.
Yeah. What is the last time any of us watched Bobby's world? I think it was like two, three years ago. It was on Hulu and we watched a couple episodes.
You guys fucked up. Yeah. We watched it. Not a whole lot.
No. Now I didn't tell him. It's like with the way we probably would. What about that?
What way he plays the monster in the bed with Prince Savage? The monster. The monster. We watched that.
We watched that. All we did last year. It does not hold up at all. I would imagine I think that doesn't hold up at all.
Yet he has the blue and the horns. Monsters, I think we got ourselves a lawsuit. Well, here's the thing. So I mean, everybody feel free to revisit our little monsters episode.
But the biggest problem with that movie is that how we man is basically just playing Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice for an entire movie and he's all. Writing women's three is the key. He might be on the podcast. It's not an official script, but I don't care.
I'll do a treatment. I can't. Because I always thought that this would be a great ending. Obviously, you couldn't work with the second one because it's too dark.
But OK, so the Maguise. Maguise is the plural form of my why. Yeah, they're shitbags. It's mark wise.
