During a recent interview, Dan Moyle of the Storyteller’s Network asked me the following question: “Do you have a life-changing story that you can look back on and say…this is what changed my life when it came to story?” My answer became the inspiration for today’s Griddlesode. It’s a story called: "Finding Uncle Kelsey."
What this episode covers
I was about ten years old. My grandfather had just parked his black Plymouth Belvedere on the side of a dirt road and cast his gaze across some marshlands. That’s when I saw a facial expression that I’d never seen on him before. Had my limited vocabulary contained a word like melancholy, I’d have used it, but the only word my young brain could come up with was sad. There he was, one of the most influential men in my life, the prankster who could make anyone laugh with his playful sarcasm, blinking periodically to combat the tears that welled in his eyes. That’s when he told me something that would not only alter the way that I looked at life, but would open me to the wonderful world of storytelling.
