Grief Beyond Control with Jennifer Lang

from Coffee, Grief, And Gratitude · host Coffee And Grief

Jennifer Lang is currently living in Tel Aviv. On this episode she reads from her memoir: Places We Left Behind: a memoir-in-miniature, and shares about her daily/weekly life living in the current war. She’s grieving for the state of the world, the world we’re giving our children. She describes what life is like for her and her family, living with fear, reading the names of fallen soldiers daily. She shares how they are volunteering weekly at farms since many of the foreign workers have left the country and farmers need help. She talks thoughtfully about the duality of feeling unsafe along with still living her normal, pre-war life, going out for coffee, having dinner with friends. As days wear on, war is being normalized for Jennifer, her family, and so many. Born in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jennifer Lang lives in Tel Aviv, where she runs Israel Writer Studio. Her prize-winning essays appear in Baltimore Review, Under the Sun, Midway Journal, and elsewhere. She holds an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and is an Assistant Editor at Brevity.
