Grifols Plasma Safety Crisis | Calgary News

Grifols, Canada’s largest private plasma collector, is under fire after Health Canada uncovered shocking safety failures at its northeast Calgary center—including accepting ineligible donors, mixing up donation bags, and using broken equipment—despite being shut down nationwide after two deaths linked to their clinics, including a 22-year-old international student. The inspection revealed rampant errors: donors donating repeatedly without eligibility checks, missed medical deferrals, poor staff training, and chaotic recordkeeping—all while plasma shortages persist globally. Grifols claims voluntary shutdown due to “unfounded attention,” but the grieving family demands full accountability, accusing the company of endangering lives and calling the commercial plasma model exploitative, while Grifols insists no link exists between their process and the deaths and vows to fix all issues.
