Groote Schuur Hospital marks one year of emergency surgery support

Long weekends typically result in trauma cases surging and overwhelming hospital emergency rooms, requiring careful triaging to ensure that the most critically injured patients receive immediate care, while other urgent surgical patients are treated as soon as theatre capacity allows. In response to this need, the Groote Schuur Hospital Trust, in partnership with Groote Schuur Hospital’s emergency, trauma, and surgical services, launched an urgent call for support in April 2025 to fund additional emergency surgery lists. The call was heeded and enabled close to 100 additional surgery lists, supporting hundreds of patients with lifesaving and life-enabling procedures.
