Ground Zero for the Pre-Trib Rapture
from Tipping Point Prophecy Update Hosted by Mark Hitchcock
On today’s program, I want to share with you an exciting rediscovery of an ancient source in support of the pre-Tribulation rapture. When the Pre-Trib Research Center was founded over 30 years ago, there was not a single historical statement before John Nelson Darby in support of the pre-Tribulation Rapture. Critics used that absence against believers in a pre-Trib constantly. Today, we have found at least 30 to 50 such statements. But the most important discovery is from Irenaeus, the bishop of Lyon in the second century. Irenaeus was born about 30 years after the apostle John died and was raised in Smyrna, the home of Polycarp, who was a direct disciple of John. Irenaeus is ground zero for the pre-Trib Rapture. He is Exhibit A. In his book Against Heresies, Irenaeus writes: “And therefore, in the end, when the church is suddenly caught up from this, it is said there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning, neither shall be, for this is the last contest of the righteous, in which, when they overcome, they are crowned with incorruption “ (Irenaeus, Against Heresies, Book 5, Chapter 29, Section 1). That is a clear pre-Tribulation Rapture statement from a man who learned from a student of the original disciples of Jesus. The End Times Timeline: God’s Eternal Plan Revealed This small comprehensive book, The End Times Timeline provides believers with an accessible framework for understanding biblical prophecy. It traces God’s prophetic program from the Old Testament through the eternal state. What’s particularly noteworthy is how current events align with ancient predictions—Israel’s restoration, technological advances enabling global surveillance, and the geopolitical alignment of nations mentioned in Ezekiel 38–39. The timeline identifies key prophetic milestones: the Rapture preceding the Tribulation, the rise of Antichrist, the rebuilt Temple, and Christ’s Second Coming. While some debate the timing of particular events like the Gog-Magog War, the overall framework reflects solid Bible research. This resource serves as an excellent tool for both new believers seeking prophetic clarity and mature Christians desiring to understand their place in God’s unfolding plan. Personal Reflection & Group Discussion For our paid subscribers, we provide a set of personal reflection and group discussion questions. These are designed to help you dig deeper into the content of the show, whether you’re watching alone, with a spouse, with a friend, or as a part of a small group. Personal Reflection 1. Irenaeus learned his theology from men who sat under the apostles themselves. How does that strengthen my confidence in the pre-Tribulation Rapture view? 2. Dr. Hitchcock said the pre-Trib Rapture should not just be a doctrine I hold, but a doctrine that holds me. Is the imminent return of Christ actually changing how I live? 3. Have I been shaken by the argument that “nobody believed in the Rapture before 1830”? How does this evidence from Irenaeus answer that objection? 4. Irenaeus also believed in a literal 1000-year reign, a literal Antichrist, a rebuilt Temple, and the restoration of Israel. Do I hold these same convictions? Small Group Discussion 1. Dr. Hitchcock pointed out that in the early 90s there were zero pre-Darby Rapture statements, and now there are 30 to 50. Why do you think these discoveries have been made in our generation? 2. Irenaeus appears to say the Church is “suddenly caught up” before the Tribulation in one passage, but then seems to place the church on earth during the Tribulation in another. How does Dr. Hitchcock explain this apparent contradiction? 3. Michael Brown and Craig Keener’s book Not Afraid of the Antichrist claims no one held the pre-Trib view before 1830. How would you respond to someone who makes that argument? 4. Dr. Hitchcock compared the rediscovery of the pre-Trib rapture to the rediscovery of justification by faith in the Reformation. Why is that a helpful comparison? 5. Even with all this historical evidence, Dr. Hitchcock said the Scriptures are the ultimate final authority. What biblical passages give you the most confidence in the pre-Tribulation Rapture? Key Facts 1. Irenaeus, bishop of Lyon in the second century AD, held to a pre-Tribulation Rapture view. 2. Irenaeus was born about 130 AD, approximately 30 years after the apostle John died. 3. Irenaeus was raised in Smyrna and knew Polycarp, who was a disciple of the apostle John. 4. In Against Heresies, Book 5, Chapter 29, Irenaeus wrote: “In the end, when the church is suddenly caught up from this, it is said there will be great tribulation.” 5. When the Pre-Trib Research Center was founded in the early 1990s, there were zero known pre-Tribulation Rapture statements before John Darby. 6. Today there are at least 30 to 50 known pre-Darby statements supporting the pre-Tribulation Rapture. 7. Other pre-Darby sources include Ephraim the Syrian (4th-5th century), the Dolcinites (1400s), William Watson’s discoveries (1600s-1700s), and Morgan Edwards (1740s). 8. Irenaeus also believed in a literal 1000-year reign of Christ, a literal future Antichrist, a rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem, and the restoration of Israel. 9. Irenaeus may have used the word “church” more broadly than modern evangelicals, referring to all of God’s people including Tribulation saints. 10. Michael Brown and Craig Keener’s book Not Afraid of the Antichrist claims no one held the pre-Trib rapture view before 1830, but the Irenaeus evidence refutes this claim. This is a public episode.
