Growing From Loss: How Grief Awakens Spirituality, Meaning, and Purpose | Stacy Parker
from Rooted & Wild · host Henry Hawk
What happens when grief changes not only the life we are living, but the way we understand life itself? In this episode of Rooted & Wild, I welcome back Stacy Parker, grief educator and author of Grief As a Second Language, for a deeply human conversation about what can emerge in the years and decades after profound loss. After the death of her first daughter, Alyssa, in 1997, Stacy entered a world she never would have chosen. Grief became part of the language of her life. But over time, that experience also began shaping the way she understood spirituality, meaning, purpose, love, and her relationship with something larger than herself. This conversation isn't about finding a silver lining in tragedy. It isn't about suggesting that everything happens for a reason or that grief is something we eventually conquer.Instead, we explore a more complicated possibility: that loss can change us, and that growth and grief can exist alongside one another. What happens to our spiritual beliefs when the unimaginable happens? Can grief deepen our relationship with mystery? How do we begin making meaning without needing to explain why something happened? And how can a life altered by loss eventually become a life that still contains purpose, connection, beauty, and even joy?Drawing from nearly three decades of lived experience and years spent supporting other grieving families, Stacy brings a perspective that honors both the devastation of loss and the extraordinary capacity of human beings to continue becoming.Because growing from loss does not mean leaving behind the person we lost.Sometimes, they become part of who we grow into.In this episode, we explore:• How profound loss can reshape our understanding of life• The difference between moving forward and “moving on”• How grief can challenge our existing spiritual beliefs• Spirituality after the death of someone we love• Finding meaning without forcing an explanation onto tragedy• Why grief and growth aren't opposites• Continuing bonds with those who have died• The ways loss can change our priorities and sense of purpose• Making room for joy without betraying our grief• How grief evolves across years and decades• Supporting bereaved parents and families• The importance of community when living with loss• Allowing spirituality to emerge through experience rather than certainty• What Stacy has learned through supporting other grieving people• Building a meaningful life that still makes room for the person who is missingAbout Stacy ParkerStacy Parker became a grief expert following the death of her first daughter, Alyssa, in 1997.
