Growing Up In and Leaving Polygamy, and Building a New Life Together with SAM & MELISSA

from Beautiful Shifts · host Lindsay & Shantil

Sam and Melissa have been married nine years, have two young children, and are the creators and hosts of the popular YouTube Channel Growing Up In Polygamy (GUIP). Today Sam shares his experiences growing up FLDS in Southern Utah including being raised in a loving family with four mothers and 36 children. We hear what it was like being in the sect with Warren Jeffs as the prophet including his imprisonment, what led Sam to leaving, and how he and Melissa (who grew up outside polygamy) met and were married. Their story includes a transition out of the mainstream LDS church to where they are today, sharing their story and helping others. We explore topics such as spiritual experiences in and outside of religion, the complexities of belief, and following your moral compass.    Sam and Melissa are well-spoken, thoughtful, and such a great couple. We feel so lucky they took the time to share their fascinating, inspiring story with us.    Find them in the following places: YouTube: @growingupinpolygamy Instagram: @growing_up_in_polygamy Website: growingupinpolygamy.com Email: [email protected]   If you or someone you love has left polygamy and needs assistance, please reach out to Holding Out HELP at 801-548-3492 or visit their website at www.holdingouthelp.org.    ............   We hope you enjoyed this conversation! Wherever Life Takes Us whereverlifetakesuss Join three best friend as they explore this beautiful world! Half Ties kwamenabrace Half-ties is a conversation series on the funny, beautiful and sometimes challenging moments that interracial couples experience being with somebody who’s culturally different from them.Hosted by creative couple Olivia & Kwamena, we listen to stories about growing up with racism and prejudice; falling in love and meeting the in-laws; navigating difficult conversations within the family and in society, and how these couples make their relationship work and what they actively choose to pass down to the next generation. C.S. Lewis's The Last Battle St. Philip's Church: Charleston, SC Come join us on Wednesday nights as we explore the riches of C.S. Lewis’s marvelous book The Last Battle, which is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia. It is a remarkable book on multiple levels and was awarded the Carnegie Medal back in the 1950s when it was first published. The Last Battle has some themes in common with The Great Divorce and That Hideous Strength that will make it an excellent follow-up to those two books, and like them, it has some remarkable resonance with things going on in today’s culture. It is a book that is both theologically rich and poignantly beautiful in its writing, and it can help equip us to live boldly for Christ in a culture that has lost its way. (Although this book is the last of The Chronicles of Narnia, it can stand on its own and it is not necessary to have read the other books for this class.)
