集群是鸟类的一种天性，成群结队总比单打独斗要有利的多。鸟类集群一是为了觅食。二是为了躲避天敌，三是为了迁徙。每个鸟在飞行中都有属于自己的一片区域，其它的鸟是不能进入的。这样可以保持队形也可以转向。每只鸟可以在不到50毫秒的时间内发现鸟群转向，从而相继完成，看起来就是集体转向。
