On March 16th, here's the latest surrounding the Cleveland Guardians. The Cleveland Guardians told four players on Monday they won't make the opening day roster, but all four will stick around through the end of spring training. Those players are top prospect Travis Bazzana, infielder Milan Tolentino, pitcher Pedro Avila, and catcher Dom Nunez. Manager Steven Vogt shared the news before a Cactus League game against the Cubs.
Bazzana hit 286 this spring over 14 at-bats in five games, with one home run and four RBI. Tolentino stood out too, posting a 1,021 OPS and 16 at-bats during his first full big league camp, including two home runs and eight walks. Vogt showed strong skills in hitting, defense, and base running. Vogt praised Bazzana's all-around game and said he needs everyday at-bats to keep developing.
He called Tolentino's growth impressive, and just one phone call from helping the team. For Nunez, who hit .300 with two home runs and 10 at-bats, Vogt highlighted his value as a teammate who helps pitchers improve. Avila posted a 3.24 ERA over eight and one-third innings in six appearances. Vogt noted the pitcher's excitement to return to Cleveland and his future big league potential, even if not right away.
Meanwhile, injured relievers are making progress. Hunter Gavis plans a bullpen session soon after forearm tightness, with a decision expected within a week. Andrew Walters, recovering from lat surgery last June, has a live batting practice session upcoming as he builds up to throwing 150 feet. This story is shared with support from our sponsor.
