Guardians Draft Young Lefty Schmidt | Cleveland Guardians News

The Guardians pulled off a surprise with their 59th overall pick: 17-year-old lefty Logan Schmidt, a towering high school pitcher from California who’s already flashing elite velocity and a nasty slider. Ranked 45th by MLB Pipeline, Schmidt’s stock soared this summer as he consistently hit 94-97 mph with his fastball and showed elite command of all three pitches. By reclassifying to finish school early, he’s primed for analytics-friendly development—and despite committing to LSU, his raw talent makes him a tantalizing gamble.
