One of the quickest ways to snuff out joy is to allow a “little” sin into your life-you know, the sort that's easy to ignore most of the time because it's nowhere near as serious as stealing or adultery, but it plagues you when things get quiet. You go about your business all day without giving it a second thought, but when you lie down at night-bam-there it is, nipping at your heels like a small but very annoying dog. You try to reclaim the joy you used to feel, but something's wrong. Your conscience has been sullied. No one's ever been saved by being good enough to deserve salvation. But we're called to live in a way that pleases God, and when we do, we experience the joy that comes from a life of integrity. When we insist on our own way because it's fun, we feel the loss, and joy evaporates. Determine today to never forfeit joy for temporary pleasure.
