Guilt, Shame, and Regret
from Let's Talk: Truth in Love · host Doug Tweed and Jes Williams
In this episode of Let’s Talk: Truth in Love, Doug and Jess take on a topic that may not sound uplifting at first: guilt, shame, and regret. But as Psalm 40 reminds us, God is able to lift us out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire, and set our feet on solid ground. These painful experiences can trap us, weigh us down, and interfere with intimacy with God—but in Christ, they do not have to define us.The conversation begins by distinguishing between three related but different struggles. Guilt is feeling bad about something we have done. Shame is feeling bad about who we are. Regret is sorrow or disappointment over an outcome, whether or not we were morally responsible for it. Each one can become a heavy burden, but each one also has a path toward healing when brought into the truth and love of God.Doug and Jess first discuss guilt through the lens of 2 Corinthians 7:10, which teaches that godly grief leads to repentance and salvation without regret, while worldly grief leads to death. Worldly guilt becomes like a backpack we carry through life, weighing us down and shaping our identity. Godly guilt, however, serves a redemptive purpose. It leads us to repentance, forgiveness, and freedom. Like a diaper that has done its job, guilt is not meant to be carried forever—it is meant to be dealt with and thrown away. The episode then turns to shame, which is often even more destructive. Shame creates a false identity. It tells us we are unloved, unworthy, defective, or beyond repair. Sometimes shame grows out of real guilt, and sometimes it comes from the condemning words and actions of others. Often, it is both. But Scripture reminds us that in Christ we are new creations. God’s truth displaces the lies that have shaped our self-understanding, and those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.Doug and Jess also explore regret—the lingering ache of “I should have,” “I wish I had,” or “if only.” Regret can trap us in the past, especially when mixed with perfectionism or false guilt. But mistakes are not the end of the story. They can become places where we learn, grow, and recognize our need for God. The Lord leads us, teaches us, and often uses even our mistakes to make us wiser, humbler, and more dependent on Him.This episode is a reminder that Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted and set captives free. Guilt, shame, and regret may be common human experiences, but they are not meant to be permanent prisons. Through repentance, forgiveness, truth, grace, and restored identity, God lifts us out of the mire and gives us a firm place to stand.Looking for more?
