落語の「死神」の原案となった作品です。設定の骨子等はかなり似通っていますが、人物造型や展開にはまた違った面白さがあります。「死神」を得意とした六代目三遊亭圓生も、名人だった圓朝が明治時代にグリム童話を元にして作ったという旨を書き記していますが、イタリアのオペラが原案という説もあります。また初演は園左だったこともあり、諸説あることを付け加えておきます。
