Gut Check
from Whispering Pirate Podcast · host Brian H.
What’s Hiding in Your Yogurt (and Granola)Alright clowns, bring it in and hug the person closest to you. If you’re not afraid of loving your neighbor, you just dosed yourself with oxytocin—a small gift to counter the serotonin and melatonin your body might not be making if you’ve been choking out your gut bacteria with glyphosate-laced food.Let me kick myself in the knees before we get too far: I’m not a doctor, not a psychiatrist, not a white coat with letters trailing behind my name. I’m a pirate with a pen, pointing to the food in front of you and asking—do you even know what you’re really eating? Because it’s not just breakfast. It’s a daily vote on your mental health, your gut, and your future.I’ve written about yogurt before, but here’s what I didn’t dig into: what’s being sprayed on the feed of the cow, and on the oats that so often get tossed into your granola.Herbicides do one thing—kill everything but the crop they’re engineered to spare. That’s why corn, wheat, and oats are genetically modified: to survive chemical warfare. And while those grains make it to your bowl, the real battle is in your gut.Your gut bacteria—the trillions of “gut buddies” Dr. Stephen Gundry once shouted about on TV—are the ones making 90% of your serotonin and melatonin. They literally poop out the neurotransmitters that stabilize your mood, your sleep, your sanity. So here’s the question: how much of your depression, anxiety, or fog is tied to the bacteria you’re killing off every time you eat glyphosate-soaked wheat or oats?Don’t expect your psychiatrist to say your cereal is a bigger threat to your mental health than the substances society shames the hardest. But the question deserves to be asked. And the answers? They’d make most people sick to their stomach. Now back to yogurt. Cows raised for dairy are fed grain. On average, it takes 50 pounds of feed to make just one pound of meat. For milk, the math piles higher: tons of herbicide-treated grain funneled through a cow before it becomes the yogurt in your fridge. That’s why “grass milk” exists. The idea is simple: the cow eats grass, not glyphosate. Cleaner feed means cleaner milk, which means cleaner yogurt, butter, and cheese. Of course, you still hope the field isn’t catching runoff from the neighbor’s chemical crop—but at least the principle stands. So the next time you reach for yogurt, or granola to sprinkle on top, pause. Because you’re not just filling a bowl—you’re casting a ballot for your mental health, your gut, and your future. This is a public episode.
