On this episode of Content Minded, I explore the art, philosophy and historical context of the Gutai Art Association in Japan, one of the most important Avant-Garde art movements that came out of the post-war period. There is a discussion about their unique approach to art materials, the metaphysics of their practise, how they relate to the writings of Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, and how they aesthetically anticipated things such as “vital materialism” and “object-orientated ontology”. I also talk about issues dealing with art and politics as it relates to a globalized world, this whole obsession over “third-worldism” and a critique of global liberalism and the erasure of true difference in various civilizations around the globe.
