In which the restless Bertram, confined within the gloomy prison walls of Portanferry, contemplates the uncertain tides of his fate whilst observing the stormy sea and moody night. Suddenly roused by tumult and the fierce glare of a spreading fire, he and his faithful friend Dinmont are thrust into the midst of a violent smuggling riot and compelled to follow a secretive guide to an uncertain refuge.
