Guy’s Night // “Fruit Check” | Schaefer Ball
from Committed · host Committed
This week at Guy’s Night, Schaefer Ball led a powerful and challenging Bible study titled “Fruit Check.” Using the account of Jesus cursing the fig tree in Mark 11, the discussion focused on a question every believer should ask: Is my life actually producing fruit? At first glance, Jesus’ interaction with the fig tree can seem surprising. Why would Jesus curse a tree? But as we dug deeper into the passage, we discovered that the fig tree was full of leaves and gave the appearance of life, yet it produced no fruit. It looked healthy from a distance, but up close it was empty. Schaefer challenged us to consider how easy it is to do the same thing spiritually. We can appear mature, religious, and active on the outside while lacking the fruit that God desires to see in our lives. The discussion also drew a powerful connection back to Genesis 3. In the Garden of Eden, sin entered the world through humanity’s rebellion, bringing death, brokenness, and a curse upon creation. The fruitless fig tree becomes a picture of a fallen world—and fallen hearts—that were created to flourish but have been affected by sin. What Jesus does to the tree is not merely an act of judgment; it is a visible lesson about the condition of humanity apart from God. Throughout the night, we reflected on the difference between appearance and reality, religion and relationship, leaves and fruit. The challenge wasn't simply to look like followers of Jesus, but to be transformed by Him from the inside out. As the study came to a close, each of us were left with a personal question: If Jesus inspected the fruit of my life today, what would He find? A healthy tree produces healthy fruit. And a life rooted in Christ should do the same. 🌱🍎✝️
