H1 - Ryan Wrecker hosts The Tara Show, talking with Rich Rubino about the historic 1776, 1876, and 1976 US elections.

from The Tara Show

During this segment of The Tara Show, guest host Ryan Wrecker and political historian Rich Rubino discussed the uniqueness of sitting members of Congress transitioning directly to the presidency, identifying Warren G. Harding, John F. Kennedy, and Barack Obama as the only sitting senators, and James A. Garfield as the only sitting House member to do so. The conversation then moved to the 1976 election, with Rubino detailing the primary race between Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, as well as Jimmy Carter’s close general election victory after facing tight competition in the Southern states. Reflecting on that era, both agreed that while the nation came together during its Bicentennial year, the current political climate in 2026 represents the deep divisions not seen since the late 1960s. Wrecker concluded the discussion with a lighthearted remark about needing an extraordinary event to unify the country before sharing Rubino's website, RichRubino.com, with listeners.

Here is the text transcript of the entire The Tara Show Hour 1 broadcast from Friday, July 3, 2026: Segment 1 00:00 Oh boy, am I happy to be here with you on this pre-4th of July. Hello, hello! It's going to be somewhat of a slow day, and you can tell it's a slow day because so many people are talking about the Taylor Swift wedding. It's so stupid, but it is something that is going to be going on among many other things in the world today. We—if you want to know the way we are and the timeline we are in when it comes to the world—within hours of each other, the President of the United States spoke to an AI representative of Theodore Roosevelt about the Panama Canal, and the biggest pop star in the world is getting married, and that seems to be one of the biggest headlines going into the 4th of July weekend. 01:05 Joining us, by the way, later this hour is my friend Rich Rubino. He's a political historian, and he's someone that—I should ask him. Someone that knows more about political history than I think anyone on the planet. I should ask him, where does the Taylor Swift wedding land in American landmarks when it comes to the history of the entire America, 250 years? Where does the Taylor Swift wedding land when it comes to significant moments in our history? If he doesn't laugh at that, um, that'll be nice. Hopefully, he doesn't hang up on me. But I see Rich all the time. He's on Fox News, he's on NewsNation, he does all kinds of different television and radio interviews throughout the country, and I'm really looking forward to having that talk with him. 02:08 By the way, next hour, too, this is going to be a fun one. Randall Sullivan's going to join us. He's the author of a new book called The First All-Star Game, and he documented kind of a pinpoint, again, in American history where times were tough. People needed to pull their spirits up. So, the idea was, let's get the biggest names in baseball to play a game against each other in Chicago. And, you know what? It was a big hit, and it did raise a lot of spirits. So, we're going to talk to Randall Sullivan about that next hour, among many other great things. 02:47 So, I really didn't know where to start here. If you want to follow me online @RyanWrecker or RyanWreckerRadio.com. But it's so strange with New York City, the way it is today. Just a couple of days ago, you had the Mayor, Adams, say, "You know what? You probably shouldn't raise your thermostat past 78," right? So, if—if you're someone that likes to keep it lower, let's say 75, 74, 73... And the first thing that came to my mind, the practical side of me said, "Okay, as a guy, I can understand that if you want to try to make sure the power grids don't blackout because everyone's trying to run their AC at full blast right now inside of your city, I get it." But then the husband in me said, "There's no way my wife would ever allow it to be set at 78. Not a chance." And if I'm a guy and my wife is getting on my back, "Why is it so hot in here?" and she's bringing that up—"Oh, it's so hot in here"—every three minutes? I couldn't do that either. Forget what the mayor says. We're not going to 78. 04:06 But then the other side of me said, a lot of them are living in these high-rise apartments, and they have neighbors on the other side of their wall. So, if you keep yours at 78, your neighbor ignores you, and your neighbor is pumping it lower, then all of a sudden, depending on how efficient those walls are, you might even share some of the same AC amenities. You're probably going to be paying the same amount and not get the benefit of it. And on top of that, if you're the one that actually is at 78 and the neighbor next to you is going down lower, then you're hoping, "Okay, maybe a little bit of igloo effect here, I can get some residual air coming off of it if my walls aren't as hot because the neighbor's not doing it. Maybe that'll be a benefit, so maybe I'll go higher than 78." I think it's going to screw with ...
