from The Charlie James Show Podcast

During the third hour of The Charlie James Show on Friday, August 7, 2026, host Charlie James engages with callers on various current topics before diving into a major technological and medical news story. After taking a call from Donald in Lake Hartwell about health habits and a call from Paul in Greenville regarding fluctuating gas prices, Charlie highlights news that scientists have used artificial intelligence to design a fully functional virus—a bacteriophage targeting E. coli—that never existed in nature. Expressing alarm over the rapid advances and lack of regulation surrounding AI-generated viruses, Charlie humorously compares the legality of synthesizing synthetic viruses to the strict federal laws prohibiting individuals from operating home moonshine stills.

TranscriptCharlie James: And welcome back to the program. Let's go to the phones, going to talk to Donald out in Lake Hartwell. How you doing, Donald?Donald: Hey, Charlie, doing great. I was cleaning my Scott's... you know, that broadcast that you, you know, the last one we had. Has a bunch of fire ants in it. Scott's Whizz broadcast, you know, the electric kind, got batteries in it and it broadcast the, the, the, run out.Charlie James: It's the, it's the handheld one.Donald: Yeah, it's the handheld, big handheld one. I hit, I hit, I hit the trigger on it and it did nothing. So I got this thing all apart, got grease on my hands, I was, I was turning it apart. I'm out here in my metal building, you know, my garage, I'm out here. But you was talking about the, you was talking about that, that vaccine. I have never taken a flu shot, never taken the COVID shot, none of that. But what I've been doing since I was 25 years old, I drink a glass of orange juice every day. It's, it's in one of these little McDonald's glasses, about 4 inches high, about 2, 2, 2 inches in diameter, you know. Drink one of those, you'll be fine.Charlie James: There you go. All right, everybody's got, everybody's got their own way. But what do you think about this? I mean, you know, now they're pushing this vaccine on us again, another one. So-called vaccine.Donald: They're nuts, they're, they're nuts. They're idiots, they're idiots, Charlie.Charlie James: Well, if you think that's bad, if you think that's bad, hold on.Donald: They're trying to manipulate us. Yeah, they're trying to manipulate you and everybody else. They ain't going to manipulate me.Charlie James: Well, I'm going to tell you even more, a scarier story coming up in just a second. I appreciate it, Donald. Let's go to Paul in Greenville. Paul, welcome.Paul: Hey, Charlie. Thank you for your show and everything the station does. Do you have your AI sarcasm meter turned on before I start?Charlie James: All right, let me, let me just turn it up to full. Yes, there we go, we're ready.Paul: Okay. I just went to Sam's and bought gas, and it's all the way up to $3.19. I can't believe it.Charlie James: Yeah! I know! I know. I mean, that's, it's crazy. Where I get it, it was $3.89 on Monday, $3.69 yesterday, and $3.50 this afternoon.Paul: I know it's volatile, but mostly I think it just turned into something else to complain about the current administration.Charlie James: Yeah, you're right about that. You're absolutely right. I appreciate it, buddy. So, talking about the vaccine. For the first time, scientists have used AI to design—are you ready for this?—AI to design a fully functional virus that's never existed in nature. John the producer is like, he's throwing his hands up. What have we become? What have we become? That's something. How long has AI been around? I mean, legitimately? Doesn't it seem like it's just, yeah, like 5 minutes this thing's been around? And we're having it design viruses? Viruses? Oh, my gosh. So, the team focused on $\phi X174$. That is a bacteriophage that infects E. coli. So, basically, if you get E. coli, which is very dangerous by the way, if you get E. coli, they can infect you with this virus, and the virus will attack the E. coli. Now, that sounds great in theory. But what about practicality? What are the other side effects that this thing's going to... What's going to happen when this thing, this virus, starts reproducing itself? They computationally generated thousands of candidate genomes, synthesized 302 AI-designed genomes, and experimentally tested them. Let me tell you something, this ought to be illegal. This should be illegal! Did you know this? Because I looked it up. I looked it up. Did you know that designing a virus is not illegal? Did you know that? Now, designing a bioweapon is illegal. But designing a virus is not illegal. I think it should be illegal. I mean, when I can't go into, you know, the basement of my home—I don't have a basement, but if ...
