He only knew to wait. Days passed. Leaves turned gold and fell around him. Snow drifted down soft as feathers. Still Hachi sat by the gate each afternoon ears lifted at every train whistle. The townspeople began to notice. They brought him warm soup and a soft scarf. “Good boy, Hachi,” they said gently. Years went by but Hachi never stopped waiting. Then one quiet evening as the sky turned pink and gold Hachi closed his eyes. Some say he finally heard footsteps familiar and warm. Some say a gentle voice called “Hachi, let’s go home.” And Hachi’s tail wagged just once like a tiny hello. From that day on a small statue stood by the station gate.
