The Jews were coming back from captivity. They had seen Babylon crushed, as God had promised, and under Darius they were returning to their homeland. They began rebuilding Jerusalem. They were focused on building their homes and had started with the temple's foundation. However, they became discouraged by several factors and focused only on continuing to build their homes. The temple remained in ruins. God uses Haggai to address generational issues applicable to today: Lethargy, Indifference, and Discouragement.
