Hallelujah!

from gracepsl

There is a word so familiar that most people say it without thinking. It gets printed on coffee mugs, sung at the end of hymns, and tossed into conversations as a casual expression of relief or surprise. The word is Hallelujah. And if you slow down long enough to understand what it actually means, it has the power to reorient everything. Hallelujah is not a generic cheer. It is a compound of two Hebrew words: Hallel, meaning to shine forth, to make a show of, to boast in something, and Yahweh, the personal covenant name of God. To say Hallelujah is to declare, "I am boasting in the self-existing, covenant-keeping God above all gods." That is not a throwaway expression. That is a declaration of allegiance, wonder, and awe. Psalm 150 opens and closes with this word, and in between it gives us a framework for what genuine, whole-hearted praise looks like. It answers four questions that cut to the core of what it means to worship God with your whole life.
