Handling AAC For Speech Hurdles
from The Autistic Mile · host Jim Gaffney
Communication doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. AAC, or Augmentative and Alternative Communication, can support autistic individuals and others with communication-related disabilities. AAC can take many forms, from picture boards and communication books to speech-generating devices and other tools designed to help someone express their needs, thoughts, and feelings. AAC is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Some children may rely on it heavily, while others may only need it in certain situations—or may not need it at all. The key is understanding the individual: their motor skills, sensory needs, language abilities, comfort level, and the environments where communication is most difficult. Adapting AAC to the person matters so much. A system is only useful if it is accessible, understandable, and practical for the person using it. With patience, observation, and the right support, AAC can become a powerful tool for helping someone communicate more independently and confidently. #TheAutisticMile #Autism #AAC #AugmentativeCommunication #AlternativeCommunication #SpecialNeeds #Neurodiversity #AutismAcceptance #CommunicationSupport #AssistiveTechnology #SpecialEducation #SpeechTherapy #Accessibility #Inclusion #YouTubeShorts
