Handling outbursts responsibly
from The Autistic Mile · host Jim Gaffney
Sometimes, even with experience and self-awareness, emotions can still spill over. Occasional outbursts, shutdowns, or moments of emotional overload can be part of life for some autistic individuals. With time, maturity, and better coping strategies, these moments can often become easier to recognize and manage—but that doesn’t always mean they disappear entirely. It’s important not to treat an accidental overload response as something shameful. At the same time, those moments can still leave other people confused, startled, or hurt, especially if they don’t understand what was happening beneath the surface. That’s why what happens afterward can matter just as much. Once someone has had time to regulate and gather themselves, a sincere explanation or apology can help repair the situation and make it clear that the reaction wasn’t about the other person—it was the result of stress, overload, or circumstances becoming too difficult to process in the moment. Clear communication after the fact can prevent misunderstandings from turning into resentment. Instead of leaving everyone to guess at what the behavior meant, it gives both sides a chance to understand what happened and move forward on the same page. #TheAutisticMile #Autism #ActuallyAutistic #Neurodiversity #EmotionalOverload #AutisticOverload #EmotionalRegulation #Communication #Accountability #AutismAcceptance #UnderstandingAutism #Relationships #SelfAwareness #Empathy #YouTubeShorts
