Welcome to the Tweed Trends Podcast. Hey, Evette, what's trending today? Hey, I'm Evette, hey girl! And you are tuned in to Tweed Trends.
It's the quickest way to find out what's trending today. Hello, and welcome back to Tweed Trends. It is the last day and the last hours of the year 2019, so it only seems appropriate that we should talk about the past, the present, and the future today. So let's get started.
So often, going into a new year, everybody wants to go and talk about the best of, you know, the best songs of the year, the best movies of the year, the best news stories of the year, all of those best of things. The only problem I have with that is that because we are all individuals and so different, that what I think was great might not be what you thought was so great. And I say that because of, especially with movies, I tend to not really go along with what movie critics say. If they say it was a bad movie, I'm going to go watch it, because nine times out of ten, I'm going to think it's hilarious.
One of the things is awesome. So there's a disconnect there. So rather than trying to do one of those types of lists just to have people kind of arguing about it and saying, oh no, she was all, she was completely off on that one. I think focusing on the past, we should look at where we were this previous year or this current year earlier in it and see where we've come.
Like to the present, what happened in the past? I know for me, the end of 2018 coming into 2019, I experienced a lot of death in my family. And the last member of my family to die was the beginning of 2019. It was my dog and I just about had it with death.
But things started to kind of pick up and turn around. You know, I started back with sweet trends. I started doing more things for myself. I'm actually in the process of writing a couple of books.
I know I should only be writing one at a time probably, but the ideas just keep coming to me. So I can't stop it. I just like, I have to go with it. But there are a number of things that when I look back, I say, you know what, I want to be better about this next year.
I want to do better. I want to be kinder. I want to, you know, but you can't just sit there and say, this is what I want. Like people come up with these resolutions to go into the new year and you know, I have issues with resolutions, but I'll talk about that with the future.
So as far as the past, take a moment to sit back and reflect on your year. Look at the good times and the bad because without the bad, you wouldn't have had such really good times, you know. Take a moment, think about it, meditate on it, and then we'll move on to step two, the present. The present.
Today, this very moment, this very second. First off, I'm pleased and excited as I'll get out that you chose to use this second to listen to my podcast. So thank you, thank you, thank you. But what about the rest of the present?
Because as each second goes by, we've come into a new present moment, a new present moment. And so by later on this evening, your new present moment is going to be, how are you bringing in the new year? And I don't know about you, but growing up, older people always had all these little sayings about stuff. And one of the things that I'd heard someone say was that the way you bring in the new year is how your year is going to be.
And the time that I heard it, I was probably so young, I was like, I don't know what that means. But as I got older, I realized like my sister, she goes and makes everything like new. So going into the new year, her car is going to be washed. Her house is going to be clean.
She's not going to have dirty clothes. The sheets on her bed are going to be clean. Like she does this whole dump. Now it's going to be interesting to see if she's doing that this year because she was with me in Texas for the past week.
We just got back yesterday. So I don't know if she's had a chance to do all that clean and stuff, but knowing her, she probably started it before she left. I'm not that girl, unfortunately. Yeah, I wish I was organized like that.
But I always have that aspiration to be that to do that, to say, you know what? I am going to clean everything. I'm going to go into the new year with a new attitude and being bright and shiny. So that was it.
But now too, as far as celebrations, like the past couple of years, my husband and I, we just kind of sit around the house. We'll watch New Year's Rock and Eve or one of our, oh gosh, what's the guy's name? He's my newsboo. Anderson Cooper.
I don't know what it is about him and that gray hair, but yes, Anderson Cooper is my newsboo. And yes, I know that he is gay, but it doesn't change things. I still like to watch Anderson Cooper. But, you know, and some friends of ours actually invite, actually, when we back up two sets of friends, one that we've just recently met and one that we've known for about a year, year and a half now.
And both have invited us to New Year's parties. Well, the ones that we've known a little bit longer, they're not really big on organization. So you ask them, they invite you someplace. You never know what time, nothing.
It's kind of like when you show up, that's when the party starts. Now, the new people that we met, they're like, okay, hors d'oeuvres, in drinks, we'll start at 730 and kids are welcome. And, you know, they gave us the whole lay of the lane and I'm like, yes, this is what I need in my life. I need structure.
But the people that we've known for a while, I've come to refer to them as shots. They like the one shots. And that's how they want to bring in the new year. 31 shots, because there are 31 days in December.
And I don't know how I feel about that. I don't know that I want to bring in my new year having done 31 shots leading up to midnight. I just really don't know about that. Whereas this other place, I know they're going to have drinks, but the fact that they have kids there that I think is going to be a little bit milder.
And I think that's how I want to bring in my new year. Say in all of that, how is it that you want to bring in your new year? How's your next year going to be? Think about it.
And the future going into 2020 or 2020, however you choose to call it, say it, or whatever, it's still two zero, two zero. People, a lot of people that I know are coming up with all of their new year's resolutions. And where I think it is good to come up with an idea of what your goals are for the coming year, I find that it's kind of pointless if there is no way to hold you accountable for it. So I'd like to recommend that you have an accountability partner.
Get with your friends like maybe the people that you choose to bring in a new year with. Have a sit down, chat, talk, and make those people your accountability group. And share what it is that you want to do. I want to eat better.
I want to work out more. Maybe you can get a workout partner from that group. And then that way, now you have somebody waiting for you at the gym. You'll be a little bit more inclined to show up.
And then on top of that, don't be so hard on yourself. If you fall short of whatever that goal is, it's okay. You have another day to do better, another hour, another second, another moment. So if you break down and eat all the candy from Halloween, it's okay.
It's all right. I need you to know that. It is. It's okay.
That doesn't mean you throw your hands on me. I'm like, oh, I messed up and I'm done then. No, no, no, no. That's all we do.
We keep trying. Another thing is a vision board. If you can see those goals in front of you every day, I know some people think vision boards are hokey, but really, if you look into the information about visualization and how people that visualize practicing instruments or sports, they actually improved just by thinking about it. So if you think about those goals, those plans, you think about the fact that you want to lose weight and you actually work towards it, you just can't think about it.
You got to work towards it too. Then think of how much stronger your mind is going to be because your mind doesn't know the difference. So it's like, I'm already there. So what I did, I started doing figure and fitness competitions.
And before I had my first competition, I went to an oxygen magazine and took a picture of one of the figure girls and I stuck my head on her body and I photocopied it and actually, I zeroxed it in black and white because she wasn't as brown as me. But so I did that and I stuck her on my refrigerator and I'm telling you, I ended up looking like that girl because my mind was like, oh, that's what you look like, you know? And it just made it that much easier one to stay out of the refrigerator once I put that sexy picture of myself on the refrigerator. I like, okay, yeah, I can't go in there and eat everything inside.
I got to be mindful. And that too, mindfulness, perfect thing for the new year, being mindful. But it all revolves around the one thing though, you have to plan. Planning is key.
You have to have some type of accountability. That's another one of the major keys here. And then lastly, like I said before, actually visualizing, making it real for yourself. You can do it.
So make those resolutions. But come up with a way to make them happen other than just saying, this is going to happen. I said I was going to tell you guys, well, I said it to myself, I didn't say it out loud. I was going to tell you what took me so long for today's episode.
Well, I went to a noon years Eve party at the living museum with my daughter. It was a kitty party where they counted down to noon. And they had a DJ. It was like a little kid club.
It was scary. But as soon as like 12 o'clock, maybe like 12, 15, 12, 20, people left and they went to go get lunch. And I was like, oh, awesome. Because then we got the rest of the museum to ourselves to actually do stuff.
So my apologies once again for being so tardy with this episode. But you know, I was not going to leave you hanging. Couldn't do that coming out of 19 going into 20. We got to do things right.
Even if we are a little late, I'm going to be kind to myself. It's all right, Yvette. It's all right. Thank you.
